Residential Cabling Plant – Doing It Right!

February 7, 2011

On Saturday, I headed out to Blake’s new house to help him install the conduit that will eventually contain low voltage wiring of all sorts.  His conduit system is a mix of 3/4″ and 1-1/4″ PVC conduit attached to open-back (Low Voltage) boxe.  Some of the conduit is run point-to-point (to a central “media closet” on the main level, while other runs dump out either in the attic (for whole-house sound) or in the to-be [initially] unfinished basement (for CAT5+ and coax).

Blake had planned ahead, so we were working on the weekend between the electrical wiring and plumbing being installed, and the insulation and sheetrock work starting.  This was convenient because we didn’t have to worry about getting in anyone’s way, since everything going in the walls was already there.  The downside, however, is that some of the walls were pretty full.  In the kitchen, we had to move a box a ways down the wall;  In the master bedroom, we had to get “a bit creative” to avoid the existing outlet boxes and cold air return vents.

Overall, though, the process was well thought out and pretty orderly.  We installed 3 boxes in most rooms, replacing the builder-installed coax boxes in most cases.  Special consideration was given to being able to get cables from a jack to a desk anywhere in the room without crossing doorways, since it’s hard to predict how someone will want to use these rooms in the future.

We worked for around 3 hours on Saturday, and got all the boxes mounted and all the 3/4″ conduit run.  Blake had neglected to notice that his clock-bit for the larger conduit had a shank larger than 3/8″, so we couldn’t get that run on Saturday.  Blake stopped by my place late last night to borrow my larger drill, and it looks like he got the remaining conduit installed today.

Once the house is closer to “finished”, we’ll be pulling actual cable into the boxes and getting it all terminated, which will be where the fun (and the work) starts.  Look for updates soon!
