IPad Lost and Found

July 1, 2011

On Tuesday, Becky was out on a training ride when she came upon something in the road.  After saving the mystery object from being run over by an oncoming car, she discovered it to be an already-roadkilled IPad 2.  We (Becky and I) have kind of an ongoing “game” where we see who can find the most obscure or valuable thing by the side of the road/trail/sidewalk.  Until this point, the record holder was Jason, having found a severely damaged IPod shuffle (which I did repair and use for a while). Usual entries include golfballs, quarters, and the occasional pair of rusty pliers.  Becky’s IPad find certainly takes the prize.

When she go home, she discovered that even though the glass was trashed, the screen still worked fine.  When I got home, we did some digging around the settings and found the owner’s email address, and sent off a quick “We found your IPad and want to give it back”. A few hours later, we got to thinking that this IPad’s owner probably isn’t checking his email, since he’s lacking his mobile device.  A bit more rummaging turned up a copy of a resume that the owner had sent to a potential employer which listed a cell phone number.

20 minutes later, I was meeting the IPad’s rightful owner at a nearby gas station. It turns out that he lives just a few blocks away, and thinks that ‘d left the tablet on the roof of his car earlier that morning. He seemed sort of surprised that we’d been able to locate him, and even more surprised that the Ipad still worked with the screen as it was.  In any case, he was pleased to have it back.  Mission Accomplished.
