Honeycomb on Gtablet? You bet!
I’ve been screwing with custom ROMs on my Viewsonic gTablet for a while now, but so far have settled on Froyo as I found the Gingerbread ROMs to be lacking in terms of stability and performance. I’d heard rumors that they’d gotten Honeycomb going on the gTablet, but had been putting off playing with it because I’ve sort of got my tablet how I like it now.
Last week, James mentioned that he’d hosed up his tablet (He and Brandon and Don have tablets identical to mine) and I volunteered to get a new system going on it, provided that I could screw around with Honeycomb in the process.
I started doing some research, and came across the “GtabComb” series of ROMs over at XDA Devs. They’ve got versions for both the v1.1 and v1.2 bootloaders (most people who are hacking their gTablet are running v1.1). I used ClockWorkMod to flash the ZIP file and purge /data, /cache and “Dalvek Cache”, and it booted without a hitch. One thing to remember: Most ROMs take a really, really long time to first-boot, so don’t get excited if it looks frozen (I need to remember this myself).
As for the software itself, it seems to be a version of Honeycomb 3.0 stripped from an Asus Transformer. Per the build notes, the built-in Camera app fails horribly, force-closing immediately. Beyond that, though, I couldn’t find anything particularly screwed up.
For my part, I’ll be flashing my tablet this weekend.
