Loading the Jetta @ Ikea

September 6, 2011

We picked up a few things at Ikea this weekend and had to get a bit creative to get it home… Turns out there’s only about 6 feet between the back of the front seats, and the right-side rear seat doesn’t leave a 28″ opening when it’s laid down…  Hooray for ratchet straps!

It turned out to be pretty secure as it made the trip from Minneapolis to Omaha with no problems. It must have looked the part as well, because people had no problem following what I’d describe as entirely too close.  For what it’s worth, main holding is accomplished by two criss-crossed straps between the forward tiedown points in the trunk.  The rest is just to keep the lid down and to keep the stack of boxes from shifting.

Before you ask, it wasn’t really noisy, as we had luggage and stuff in the back seat, but it did seem to cut into economy a bit… I was off a few MPG, though some of that could have been speed-related.
